Sir Roger, who was born in Colchester in 1931, used ‘ingenious mathematical strategies” in his proof that black holes are a direct consequence of Albert Einstein’s normal idea of relativity, the committee mentioned.

It added that Einstein didn’t himself imagine that black holes – super-heavyweight monsters that seize every thing that enters them – actually exist.
